Some people say that reaching the age of 30 is the peak of our self-discovery. 

But for most women, arriving at this time of their lives meant facing the pressure of settling down. Old cultural norms often dictate the female population to quit jobs or stay on stable career paths to build a better home. 

However, did you know that a career switch at 30 isn’t uncommon for women nowadays? 

In fact, a survey shows that 61% of women have planned a major career change since the pandemic started.

False Myth #1: There’s an age limit for changing careers

Setting an age limit in changing careers is by far the most common myth out there. 

Although we cannot discredit that many professionals did find their career calling in their 20s, we should also acknowledge that each of us walks different paths. Just like some roads are full of hurdles and humps, realizing dreams and passions often has unique timelines.  

Among many women who pursued different careers at a later age is Michelle Obama. The former first lady thought she would be spending her whole life on a high-rise building while doing corporate legal work until she found her true calling in public service. 

Like her, Ava DuVernay also thought of changing careers at 30. She was a publicist covering filmmakers until she decided to become one herself. It was intimidating, but her experience in observing people in the industry gave her an edge to pursue another career. 

These success stories from real women are testaments that starting a career at 30 can be hard but worth every struggle at the same time. 


False Myth #2: You’re back at square one

Some may assume that a career switch at 30 may cause one to start from scratch. However, you can rest your worries because that’s not always the case.

While it’s advisable to gain relevant skillsets for the new career you want to pursue, there are transferable skills from your previous job that you can apply to your new chosen field. All you need to do is find a way to present it differently. 

If you’re reluctant to hit the restart button altogether, you can consider changing roles but not the industry you’re working in and vice versa.  

Always remember, there’s no shame in learning things on the job. As a matter of fact, what most company managers look for in an employee is the right mindset and attitude towards work. 

False Myth #3: Expect lower income or salary

Planning a change of career at 30 doesn’t always end up in a lower salary. It may be true to a certain extent, but it’s a case-to-case basis and largely depends on the profession you want to pursue.
