How to Start a Side Hustle as a Mother with a Full-Time Job

Starting a business or a side hustle, especially if you are juggling motherhood and a full-time job, seems impossible, but not for Super Mom Aileen Jizmundo. She was working as an accountant with four kids when she started her first side hustle.

Aileen is a long-time friend of mine, and she’s my go-to person whenever I have questions about business and relationships. She’s really a superwoman, and my idol too! I interviewed her for the Passion Hustler series here in my blog. Let us deep-dive on how to start a side hustle if you are a mother with a full-time job.

Spoiler alert: After working for 25 years, she finally quitted her job two years ago as an accountant and focused on her two passions: her family and her side hustles. Her side hustles have become her full-time job.

The big questions here are:

  • How did she manage her time as she worked full time, pursue her side hustles and still bring up four kids to the world?
  • How did she transition from being a side hustler to a full-time businesswoman?

At a glance, this was how her routine looks like:

  • 5 am: Wake up and drink coffee
  • 6 am: Cook breakfast and bond a little bit with the children before they go to school
  • 8 am: One hour travel to work
  • 9 am – 6 pm: Full-time job as an accountant
  • 7 – 10 pm: Cook at home, household chores, bonds with the children
  • 10 pm – 12 midnight: Free time to do her side hustles

It doesn’t look so easy with a packed schedule, but Aileen highlighted how she divided her time to keep everyone happy. Plus, her kids know each of their responsibilities so she does not have to do all of the chores.

Does she ever have time for herself?

Yes! Her favorite time was the golden hour from 5 – 6 am when Aileen could drink her coffee in peace. This is her way of relaxing as she listens to music and prepares herself for the long day ahead.

What was Aileen’s first side hustle?

Her first side hustle was selling handmade accessories for HKD 100.

It was followed by selling her delicious cupcakes.

These are the most common side hustle ideas for mothers, and she was running these side hustles from home.

Aileen admitted that she did not earn much from these products but were great outlets for her to do something she loves.

Passion Hustles is doing something for yourself. You cannot expect to earn money from it right away.

Here’s the main principle of following your passion hustles:

People say it’s dangerous to follow your passion because you don’t know if you can earn enough money to survive from it. However, you cannot truly rely on your side hustle for income in the first place especially in the beginning.

I agree. What’s more dangerous is relying on your full-time job because you will always be replaceable.

Now that Aileen is a full-time entrepreneur, she runs the following businesses:

Ay Butiki Apparel Shop is a habitual Pinoy expression when wonders struck. Lizard is a symbol of rebirth, e-generation, and regrow. This expression gives me the courage to pursue the work that I wanted. Creating apparel for everyone.
