Optimism has its benefits. You’ll feel healthier, live longer, and experience less stress. Optimistic people are also known to form better relationships. But how about with business? Should you only be equipped with optimism in starting a business?

Realistically speaking, we can’t always see the glass half full or half empty. Sometimes, especially when it comes to starting a business, seeing both sides of the coin can provide a more meaningful solution.

Let’s take a Life Orientation Test!

The revised life orientation test was developed by psychologist Michael Scheier and colleagues in 1994. It aims to measure how optimistic or pessimistic people feel about the future.

Instructions: Please respond as accurately and honestly as you can.

Response format:

A = Strongly Agree

B = Agree

C = Neutral

D = Disagree

E = Strongly Disagree

Questions:

1. In uncertain times, I usually expect the best.

2. It’s easy for me to relax.

3. If something can go wrong for me, it will.

4. I’m always optimistic about my future.

5. I enjoy my friends a lot.

6. It’s important for me to keep busy.

7. I hardly ever expect things to go my way.

8. I don’t get upset too easily.

9. I rarely count on good things happening to me.

10. Overall, I expect more good things to happen to me than bad.

Here’s how to calculate your score!

Let’s ignore your answers to questions 2, 5, 6, and 8. These are fillers!

For questions 1, 4 and 10: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, E = 0.

For questions 3, 7 and 9: A = 0, B = 1, C = 2, D = 3, E = 4.

Add the subtotals above: _________. This is your optimism score.

Results – Which One Are You?

0 is extreme pessimism.

24 is extreme optimism.

On average, most people score 15 – slightly optimistic.

One of today’s most popular change methods, Appreciative Inquiry (AI) has been used to undertake transformational initiatives in dozens of organizations, ranging from McDonald’s to the U.S. Navy to Save the Children. The assumption of AI is simple: Every organization has something that works right—things that give it life when it is vital, effective, and successful. AI begins by identifying this positive core and connecting organizational visions, plans, and structures to it in ways that heighten energy and inspire action for change.

The Appreciative Inquiry Handbook contains everything you need to launch any kind of AI initiative. The authors provide background information on what AI is and how it works, and offer sample project plans, designs, agendas, course outlines, interview guidelines, participant worksheets, a list of resources, and more. From abstract principles underlying AI to actual tools used in different settings, from detailed descriptions of AI interventions to practical tips to classic AI articles, this workbook presents all of the introductory concepts, examples, and aids necessary to engage yourself and others in Appreciative Inquiry.
